They're really working out how to behave and what the world is like, so take this time as a parent to reinforce the "Do good stuff for people, it makes you feel good!" lesson, which translates directly to real life. Rescuing people, finding stuff that was taken or lost, getting from one place to another, planning a huge event that goes wrong right before the guest of honour shows up, etc. My personal opinions are that even at 7 and 9 they should be doing more "helpful" stuff rather than slaying monsters. That's cool, let them follow their imagination, don't push them too hard to get back on track. They'll get distracted, they'll decide to follow stuff you never even considered. It was probably a half hour of game time that we did nothing about plot, but wow, was she happy. The olders were totally into it and helped her find wood, and lay it properly and she lit that fire. She had that skill, and gosh darnit she wanted to role play it.

The older ones played with the plot, the middle ones went along with the older ones and tried to chip in, and the youngest did things like hyper-focus on being able to light a campfire when then stopped for the night. I've played with my kids since the beginning, but I particularly remember a Mouse Guard type campaign when they were 5, 9, 11, 12 and 14. Like /u/wickedmurph says, you'l have to treat them differently. GMing for kids makes me much more nervous than when I play with adults, but it's so rewarding. I don't really have any ideas on how to encourage that, I think it might just be something that comes with playing the game more. My groups never really seemed to grok the idea of "trying harder". That's not something I would do with grownups, but kids seem to really latch on to the "ownership" of the narrative. When the party comes to a bridge, I'll ask one of the players what color it is. I had success asking a lot more narrative "fluff" questions than I would otherwise. I would occasionally have a companion offer a really crazy dumb idea, so the kids can all shout "NO!" at the same time. They can offer ideas (in their companion voices) and make suggestions. I found that the companions are great for this kind of thing. It's like they can't really consider the possibilities until they have a few possibilities in front of them.

If I frame it as a series of choices, then they can pick one of those, or often come up with their own. They don't have the context to really take the initiative in a story, so when I ask "What do you want to do?", I get a lot of blank stares. r/boardgames - Boardgames that isn't TTRPGs.
